modern on maui

After an inspiring visit to both Taalman and Koch's Joshua Tree itHouse and the Blue Sky "Rock Reach" house, I came up with a hybrid concept for my house in Haiku, Maui.  The design revolves around two offset rectangles with a gently sloping shed roof over both rectangles.  The rear rectangle is the private space with 2 bedrooms and a sandwiched bathroom.  The front rectangle is the public space overlooking the tea fields and the ocean below. Technical benefits of this design have all the plumbing gathered in one "tech aisle" behind the kitchen and in-between the bathroom.  With the addition of a front deck using Marine grade "dock surface" would create a workable waterproof outdoor space that can handle the Haiku weather with ease.

Definitely not on Maui, but included here as a great example of the Sarasota School of Architecture.  I had the great pleasure of touring this house a year ago.  Making massive use of Jalousie windows (the owners can't stand that because they are kind of a nightmare to clean!!) - the house became a landmark - and was used as the "model home" for the new subdivision "Lido Key".   Although not designed for the Hawaiian climate, there are aspects of this house that could work really well in Hawaii.

I'm not sure if this house qualifies as "modern" - although there is a design sensibility inherent in its architecture that does take nice advantage of the courtyard and outdoor living. For this reason, I'm including it in this blog.  This house is an "L" shaped design where most rooms pour out into a central courtyard and overlook a pool.  But this joint needs WORK okay!!! In any case, having interesting modern properties that require tons of work is nothing unique.  I'm reminded of the story of the leaking roofs of many of Frank Lloyd Wright's buildings.  As a great egotist that he was, he told his clients to put a bucket under the dripping water.
